Kerry Haters Should Listen to Kerry

Marty Peretz wrote a provocative article in the Wall Street Journal of 4 October 2004. But he distorted Kerry’s strategy for extracting the U.S. from its morass in Iraq.

1) Yes, it is unlikely that European allies who resisted the invasion of Iraq would now join the U.S. in pursuing the occupation’s objectives. However, our allies may be prodded to respond to the appeal of a legitimate regime that would be established there by a recognizably universal election.

2) No, the U.N. are not needed for finishing the process of regime change in Iraq. Their role is to keep the peace, which they were deceived into believing existed at the time of the bomb-blast which destroyed their headquarters in Baghdad and killed their officials.

3) There was no irony in Kerry’s position on North Korea. His distinction between unilateral invasion of Iraq and unilateral talks with Kim Jong Il was clear.
