Elections Assure Freedom, Technology Assures Fairness

The greatest benefit of elected representative government is that the public has a group of paid watchdogs to prevent the assumption to power by dictators. Unfortunately, that does not mean that the public is protected from economic exploitation by entrepreneurs on whose financial support those representatives may depend in order to win election to office.

Information is the best control over such distortion of the political system. Now that technology has made possible the expanded reach of information beyond print and television journalism to individual publishing over the Internet, the equalizing potential of information has theoretically been strengthened. This may allow representative government to assure fairness as well as freedom.
