What Is Government For?

Is government a precondition of life? No matter what, there will always a ruling authority. Entropy is not compatible with intelligent life. That is what has led us to postulate that there is a Supreme Being who is necessary to bring order to the universe and take it out of chaos.

Although that may only be a delusion, there surely is a microcosm in that universe where we thinking organisms live our brief lives. And that corner of space long ago became too crowded for allowing individuals to pursue their personal objectives in the absence of rules. Either those rules favor one or some of us, or they promote equal opportunity among us for the pursuit of happiness.

Contrary to Senator Lee’s aphorism, liberty is not the objective of life. We find ourselves in a confined space where peace and prosperity for each of us can only be achieved by satisfying everyone’s desire to get a fair deal. Democracy is the best way we have so far invented to accomplish that goal. If there is a Supreme Being, it will have to be more self-assertive for us to rely on it to provide a better solution to the problem of governing the world community or any portion of it.
