The Need for Institutions
Regarding Eara Klein's opinion piece in the 5/14/2022 NYT institutions mediate values and norms. Liberalism accepts or even promotes changing norms,but does not necessarily discount the value of institutions. A liberal may use institutions to achieve his goals.
Professor Patrick Deneen appears to confuse liberalism with libertarianism, the chief anti-institutional philosophy. In fact, the Republican Party has been corrupted by a libertarian disdain for institutions, symbolized by the presumptive solipsism of Donald J. Trump.
