Why We Needed Trump
Did we really need President Donald Trump to remind us all around the world that lasting personal happiness only occurs when we strive to maximize the common welfare? Sure, the President believes he has attained his best personal results by ignoring everyone else’s goals except when they achieve his own. But his win/lose strategy only works in a zero sum game,
The MAGA Crowd who returned him to the White House had lost patience with the hope that they would gain in the long run even if others achieved their own goals sooner than they. So, they drank the cool-aid and went with the would-be king. Now they are beginning to see that without constant vigilance, or permanent defanging, the promises of a self-centered monarch will reveal themselves to be lies.
With luck, we are learning a valuable lesson. Perhaps the best gift for our 250th anniversary will be a successful resumption of liberal democracy following the next general election. Hopefully, we and the rest of the world will achieve that before the next quarter millennium.
